Proverbs 10

King James Version (KJV)

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing: but righteousness delivereth from death.

3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

4 He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

6 Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

7 The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

8 The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

9 He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

10 He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.

11 The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.

13 In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

14 Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

15 The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

16 The labour of the righteous tendeth to life: the fruit of the wicked to sin.

17 He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

18 He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool.

19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

20 The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

21 The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

22 The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom.

24 The fear of the wicked, it shall come upon him: but the desire of the righteous shall be granted.

25 As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him.

27 The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

28 The hope of the righteous shall be gladness: but the expectation of the wicked shall perish.

29 The way of the Lord is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

30 The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth.

31 The mouth of the just bringeth forth wisdom: but the froward tongue shall be cut out.

32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable: but the mouth of the wicked speaketh frowardness.

Proverbs 10

Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

1 The proverbs of Shlomo:

A wise son is a joy to his father,
but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

2 No good comes from ill-gotten wealth,
but righteousness rescues from death.
3 Adonai does not let the righteous go hungry,
but he thwarts the craving of the wicked.

4 Idle hands bring poverty;
diligent hands bring wealth.
5 A sensible person gathers in summer,
but he who sleeps during harvest is an embarrassment.

6 Blessings are for the head of the righteous,
but the speech of the wicked is a cover for violence.
7 The memory of the righteous will be for a blessing,
but the reputation of the wicked will rot.
8 Wise-hearted people take orders,
but a babbling fool will have trouble.

9 He who walks purely walks securely,
but he who walks in crooked ways will be found out.

10 He who winks his eye [instead of rebuking] causes pain,
yet a babbling fool will have trouble.

11 The speech of the righteous is a fountain of life,
but the speech of the wicked is a cover for violence.

12 Hate stirs up disputes,
but love covers all kinds of transgressions.

13 On the lips of the intelligent is found wisdom,
but a stick is in store for the back of a fool.
14 Wise people hide their knowledge,
but when a fool speaks, ruin is imminent.

15 The wealth of the rich is his fortified city;
the ruin of the poor is their poverty.

16 The activity of the righteous is for life;
the income of the wicked is for sin.

17 He who observes discipline is on the way to life;
but he who ignores correction is making a mistake.

18 He who covers up hate has lips that lie,
and anyone who slanders is a fool.
19 When words are many, sin is not lacking;
so he who controls his speech is wise.
20 The tongue of the righteous is like pure silver,
but the mind of the wicked is worth little.
21 The lips of the righteous feed many,
but fools die for lack of sense.

22 The blessing of Adonai is what makes people rich,
and he doesn’t mix sorrow with it.

23 To a fool, vileness is like a game,
as is wisdom to a person of discernment.

24 What a fool dreads will overtake him,
but the righteous will be given his desire.
25 When the storm has passed, the wicked are gone;
but the righteous are firmly established forever.
26 Like vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes
is a lazy person to his employer.

27 The fear of Adonai adds length to life,
but the years of the wicked are cut short.
28 What the righteous hope for will end in joy;
what the wicked expect will come to nothing.
29 The way of Adonai is a stronghold to the upright
but ruin to those who do evil.
30 The righteous will never be moved,
but the wicked will not remain in the land.

31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom,
but the perverse tongue will be cut off.
32 The lips of the righteous know what is wanted,
but the mouth of the wicked [knows] deceit.

Here, Solomon’s proverbs are teaching, yet again, that wisdom and righteousness will prevail. We are wise to learn from him… God did grant him the most wisdom that He had ever given anyone!

From wisdom and knowledge, we have an abundance of gifts. We never seem to realize how Blessed that we are. We have learned so very much: our grandparents would have never imagined typing into a  machine and someone thousands of miles away, reading  their words in nanoseconds!

Yet, for all of our intellingent conversations…. we still lack the knowledge to guard our tongue!!!

One  small word…. and in this day and age, one small typo…. can  linger in the air, and online, indefintely. As I  write these words, I  pray  that my studies, and my own preception of what I read…. Lord, let it  be a Light to someone. Let it be a Blessing.

I am human: I have met some people who chose not to like me. So have you, I am sure.

I have been accused of some things that I did not do… so have you, probably.

In this study, I  only pray that you read my words for what they are: my  thoughts and my prayers, as I re read the book of Proverbs.

Proverbs 9

King James Version (KJV)

1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:

2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.

3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,

4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

7 He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.

8 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.

9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.

11 For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.

12 If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

13 A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.

14 For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

15 To call passengers who go right on their ways:

16 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

18 But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

Proverbs 9

Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

1 Wisdom has built herself a house;
she has carved her seven pillars.
2 She has prepared her food, spiced her wine,
and she has set her table.
3 She has sent out her young girls [with invitations];
she calls from the heights of the city,
4 “Whoever is unsure of himself, turn in here!”
To someone weak-willed she says,
5 “Come and eat my food!
Drink the wine I have mixed!
6 Don’t stay unsure of yourself, but live!
Walk in the way of understanding!”
7 “He who corrects a scoffer only gets insulted;
reproving a wicked man becomes his blemish.
8 If you reprove a scoffer, he will hate you;
if you reprove a wise man, he will love you.
9 Give to a wise man, and he grows still wiser;
teach a righteous man, and he will learn still more.
10 The fear of Adonai is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of holy ones is understanding.
11 For with me, your days will be increased;
years will be added to your life.
12 If you are wise, your wisdom helps you;
but if you scoff, you bear the consequences alone.”

13 The foolish woman is coarse;
she doesn’t think, and she doesn’t know a thing.
14 She sits at the door of her house
or on a seat at the heights of the city,
15 calling to those who pass by,
to those going straight along their ways,
16 “Whoever is unsure of himself, turn in here!”
To someone weak-willed she says,
17 “Stolen water is sweet;
food eaten in secret is pleasant.”
18 But he doesn’t realize
that the dead are there,
and that those who accept her invitation
are in the depths of Sh’ol.

To divide any of these verses would be a mistake. Here, we plainly see  the  vast differences in  being wise, or foolish. The choice is ours.

Very simply, very plainly.

The wise one prepares, and has made all of the arrnagements. In following that choice, we all can see the dinner that has been prepared. The table is set: the drinks are poured. Walk with wisdom, and eat your fill!

Sadly, the foolish make no preparations, nor set a banquet. Steal your drink and eat whatever you may find. So many seem to chhose that path of no resistance.

It’s difficult to prepare a table, and set a banquet fit for a King! It’s not easy making sure that all the invitations have been mailed, and thst no guest leaves hungry.Much less, have a guest who doesn’t have a good time! Any hostess can you…. it’s not easy.

Comparing wisdom to a banquet of sorts may be childish, but, it’s as plain a reference as you will ever see. Finding wisdom is  very similar to dicovering a banquet of delights! You are free to eat all that you want, and, best of all… you are not required to clean up afterward!! You can stay and partake of the dining pleasures as long as you want!! The company is delightful, the conversation stimulating!

Who doesn’t like a good party?  Our Lord has sent out the invitations…… won’t you join Him?

The first step is replying to His R.S.V.P.

All you have to do is say, Yes, Lord, I will.

Proverbs 5

King James Version (KJV)

1My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:

2 That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb,                          and her mouth is smoother than oil:

4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

5 Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable,                that thou canst not know them.

7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:

10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;

11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

12 And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,  nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.

18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe;  let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman,  and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,             and he pondereth all his goings.

22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself,  and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness                      of his folly he shall go astray.

Proverbs 5

Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

1My son, pay attention to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding; 2 so that you will preserve discretion and your lips keep watch over knowledge.

3 For the lips of a woman who is a stranger drop honey,               her mouth is smoother than oil;                                 4 but in the end she is as bitter as wormwood,                                                        sharp as a double-edged sword.                                                               5 Her feet go down to death, her steps lead straight to Sh’ol; 6 she doesn’t walk the level path of life — her course wanders all over, but she doesn’t know it.                        7 So now, children, listen to me; don’t turn away from what I am saying: 8 distance your way from her, stay far from the door of her house; 9 so that you won’t give your vigor to others                         and your years to someone who is cruel,                 10 so strangers won’t be filled with your strength and what you worked for go to a foreign house. 11 Then, when your flesh and bones have shrunk,                  at the end of your life, you would moan,                                                      12 “How I hated discipline! My whole being despised reproof, 13 I ignored what my teachers said, I didn’t listen to my instructors. 14 I took part in almost every kind of evil, and the whole community knew it.”

15 Drink the water from your own cistern, fresh water from your own well. 16 Let what your springs produce be dispersed outside, streams of water flowing in the streets;                                               17 but let them be for you alone and not for strangers with you. 18 Let your fountain, the wife of your youth, be blessed; find joy in her — 19 a lovely deer, a graceful fawn; let her breasts satisfy you at all times, always be infatuated with her love.                 20 My son, why be infatuated with an unknown woman? Why embrace the body of a loose woman?                         21 For Adonai is watching a man’s ways; he surveys all his paths. 22 A wicked person’s own crimes will trap him, he will be held fast by the ropes of his sin. 23 He will die from lack of discipline; the magnitude of his folly will make him totter and fall.

Verses 1-7:

 1My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:                                                                                                 :

2 That thou mayest regard discretion,

and that thy lips may keep knowledge.

3 For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth

is smoother than oil:

4 But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

5 Her feet go down to death;

her steps take hold on hell.6 Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life,

her ways are moveable,

that thou canst not know them.

7 Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

Oh, that we would actually attend to the  hard won wisdom of our elders:  even so much more, our Father!

But, no, we are enticed away from that wisdom, by “her”….

whoever, or whatever, we choose to let “her” be.

Fast income, better homes, better cars, more…. stuff.

We think we know much more than our elders can

possibly teach us. Why can’t we realize…

they’ve been down this path before us??? They had the

same temptations that we face. Their lives may have been in a simpler time,

 but, they faced temptation just as we all do.

If we would only listen, and attend, to their  hard won wisdom!

Temptation is a very cruel mistress.

Just when you think it has been satisfied: it raises its enticing head yet again.

We are swept away again…will it ever end?

  Only when we realize that  the end  is very bitter:

 that  temptation is just that. It is never satisfied.

Not ever.We may spend most of our lives falling for its’ lies.

The  empty promises of a brighter future.

 Promises that will never be kept: the only Promise Keeper that

 we can rely on is our Father!!!!

 We need to hear His  Words now: not later…..

we would be so much wiser to attend to His Words in our youth

. As we age, we would age gracefully in knowing Him!!!

 In knowing that every promise that He ever made: He ALWAYS  keeps them!!

 Remember that song we sang in Sunday School?

 The one about His Promises being ours? That has not changed!

Verses 8-17

8 Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

9 Lest thou give thine honour unto others,

and thy years unto the cruel:10 Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth;

and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;

11 And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,

12 And say, How have I hated instruction,

 and my heart despised reproof;

13 And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers,

nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!14 I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

15 Drink waters out of thine own cistern,

and running waters out of thine own well.

16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad,

and rivers of waters in the streets.

17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.

    Let us not waste our time following down the path  of  temptation.

Let us not waste our youth  on that path of destruction.

Giving our very souls,at times, to that  enchantress of our  destinies.

The ones who take over our thoughts, our lives, and even our homes.

Do you think our  Creator is happy with our choices?

That we ignore our teachings, and follow blindly down that path?

Our time is so much better spent, seeking His Wisdom…

that we might, instead, be fruitful in our lives!!

That we might be Blessed by Him, and see that evidence in our lives!

 He has so much better for us!

Verses 18-25

18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe;

let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman,

and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord,

and he pondereth all his goings.

22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself,

and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.

23 He shall die without instruction;

 and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

We all must stay true to the teachings of our  Father:

temptation is but a strange bedfellow that none if us need.

Our Father knows our needs before we even ask:

 why waste our lives seeking that we do not need?

Our sins will indeed be known in the end, the Lord knows them even now.

 Let not our children say that we were slaves to our follies!!!!

Let us all be the teachers of our hard won wisdom,

 that our children may learn from us.

 Even as we learn from our Lord.

May our hearts always  yearn to know Him more.
